On Tuesday 9 May 2023, Dr Antoine Grima, Head of Department, Department of Environment and Resources Law at the Faculty of Laws, delivered a lecture to the students and external course participants of the (IMO) on Sea Level rise, Ocean Governance and International Security Implications.
During the session, Dr Grima looked into how sea level rise is currently testing to its limits the international community's commitment to counter international law issues brought about by new environmental realities. He explained that the continued application of existing core international law principles including those concerning the Law of the Sea rules are an added, perhaps unnecessary, burden for those States which are already physically combating for their survival.
Dr Grima concluded the session by giving an overview of international and regional initiatives taken in this regard.
