The Department of Environmental Design, at the Faculty for the Built Environment, has recently hosted two guest lecturers, separately, over the span of two weeks.
Professor Architect Luca Maria Francesco Fabris, from the Politecnico di Milano, delivered a series of lectures to B.Sc students, where he shared his knowledge and insights into the critical aspects of environmental design of buildings, in the context of global warming in a Mediterranean climate. One evening he also delivered a public lecture, delivered to both architects and engineers, entitled ‘Milano, the Ever-Growing Green City. A Utopia Becoming a Sustainable Reality’. Here he demonstrated how the ‘Bosco Verticale’ the augmented a contagious yearning for greenery in the City. Milano is one urban hub in northern Europe, that Luca Fabris claims to be an exemplar of what other major cities should yearn for, in terms of its green spaces and sustainable water infrastructure, which he coins as the ‘Blu e Verde’ strategy.
Professor Stephen Pretlove, is an engineer by profession, hailing from Lincoln University in the UK, is head of school of Architecture and the Built Environment. He delivered and interacted with students in design workshop tutorials, as well as delivered a series of lectures on the need of architects’ sensitivity to climate change, and its influence on passive and bio-climatic design of buildings.
Separately, in collaboration with the ‘Kamra tal-Periti’ and the Chamber of Engineers, an evening public lecture was again organised, also delivered to both architects and engineers, entitled ‘Energy Auditing: Sustainability by Design’. Here he demonstrated the ever increasing demand for an energy conscious approach to passive design and building services, and their integration within buildings, be it passive or hybrid.
The series of lectures were truly in line with the established seventeen sustainable development goals, particularly Goal 11, namely ‘Sustainable Cities & Communities’, a motto that our University truly embraces.
Professor Vincent Buhagiar hosted the two guests on behalf of the Department of Environmental Design. Perit Luca Caruso coordinated the posters and dissemination of the internal lectures with FBE students.
