Dr Charles J. Farrugia was this year’s Visiting Professor on the archives courses organised by the Università degli Studi of Firenze. Farrugia, who is a Senior Lecturer and the Head of Department of Library, ¸£ÀûÔÚÏßÃâ·Ñ and Archive Sciences at our University delivered lectures on two main courses. The first course was entitled Archivistica Pubblica as part of the 'Scienze Archivistiche e Biblioteconomiche' and the second Archivistica Tecnica, both led by Professor Laura Giambastiani.
In his presentations he touched on the interplay between public and private archives and its challenges due to the different European historical and legal traditions resulting in diverse approaches to the preservation, archival organisation, cataloguing and access rules. While on his stay in Florence Farrugia also addressed students on the Percorso di Eccellenza at SAGAS. During this lecture he discussed topical themes in the archival world – archival fragmentation, organisational divisions, institutional fractures and displaced (or shared) archival records amongst others. Farrugia also took the opportunity to forge new relations between SAGAS and the European Union Archives operating from Villa Salviati in Florence through an ad hoc visit he organised for the students to that archives.
