As part of its events to celebrate International Nurses' Day 2023, the Department of Nursing at the Faculty of Health Sciences organised an inter-disciplinary webinar on Rehabilitation during and After Critical Care, with the participation of two eminent speakers: Dr Peter Nydahl, a nurse researcher and clinician based in Germany, and Mr Jason Beeching, a sepsis survivor and patient advocate from the United Kingdom. Dr Nydahl shared the current evidence from research and best practice on rehabilitation during and after a patient's stay in an intensive care unit (ICU), with a special focus on early mobilisation, patient diarises and post-intensive care syndrome. Mr Beeching shared his experience as a former ICU patient, including real dreams, reference to his condition and its management and his long journey of rehabilitation after leaving the ICU.
This webinar was originally planned as part of a postgraduate study unit on the Advanced Nursing Management of Critically Ill Patients, but it was extended to any health and social care professional with an interest in holistic patient care and rehabilitation. Indeed, about 95 persons from various professions (nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, priests, psychologists, academics and students) and from various countries (Malta, United Kingdom, Portugal, Norway, Lithuania and Indonesia) participated. The webinar was formally opened by Dr Trevor Abela Fiorentino, Head of the Department of Nursing, and moderated by the study unit coordinator, Dr Josef Trapani, a senior lecturer in the same department.
