Today, Monday 2 October 2023, marks the start of a new academic year at the University of Malta, with a new student intake of 4,900 joining the community (figure as at 29 September 2023).
Over 2,700 students have enrolled into undergraduate courses, while over 1,500 students will be reading for postgraduate degrees and a further 700 Erasmus+ and Visiting students will be registered for individual study-units.
The Junior College is welcoming over 1,000 students, bringing the total number of students there to over 1,900.
The University Rector, Prof. Alfred J. Vella addressed this year's cohort during the Opening Ceremony, with a speech titled 'Education Lifts You Up; At UM, You Rise Much Higher'. The ceremony was held earlier today at Sir Temi Zammit Hall.
Another key speaker at the Ceremony was KSU President, Mr Jeremy Mifsud Bonnici, who reiterated the Council's pledge to be student-led and student-driven.

A total of 1,800 international students representing no less than 125 different countries will be pursuing studies at the University this year.

This academic year, students are experiencing University life first-hand by attending lectures in person.
Continuing students returned on Monday 25 September 2023, whereas most first-year students will commence on Thursday 5 October 2023.
