Earlier this year, , who coordinates the Arabic Programmes in the , visited Universit盲t Vienna and completed a series of lectures at the Institut f眉r Orientalistik, a leading European institution in the study of Arabic dialects.
The topics chosen for the lecture series were based on research interests of the resident academic, namely, Comparative Arabic-Maltese Studies and Salafi-Jihadi Discourse.
Several lectures explored the Arabic-Maltese Linguistic Relationship, focusing on the Phonology, Morphology and Lexicon in Maltese. The Scholar also discussed similarities between Maltese and different varieties of Arabic, including Andalusi Arabic and Tunisian Arabic. In other lectures related to Salafi-Jihadism, Dr Gatt examined how traditions are discursively exploited in Jihadi circles to frame a particular ideological worldview.
Dr Gatt exchanged his academic experiences with colleagues during the research stay and discussed ongoing research projects. The exchange of ideas and insights aimed to foster a collaborative environment and contribute to the shared knowledge between the two institutions, in line with UM鈥檚 staff internationalisation strategies. This research visit was made possible through the financial support of Staff Mobility for Teaching.
