On Monday 26 February 2024, just one day after the actual day was celebrated internationally, the University of Malta’s International Office organised an event at Quadrangle in honour of Kuwaiti National Day.
The celebration, commemorating the 63rd anniversary of the Kuwaiti National Day, and the 33rd anniversary of the country’s Liberation, kicked off with an opening ceremony at 09:00.
Visitors were able to get a taste of the Kuwaiti culture through the various activities on display, namely Kuwaiti food tasting, Kuwaiti music, the screening of a video, a Henna drawing stand, and sessions on Arabic calligraphy and language. The Kuwaiti students also donned traditional Kuwaiti clothing.
“The University is a community, part of which is an international community. Within that community, the Kuwaiti presence is one of the strongest. We are proud of our deep commitment towards nurturing Kuwaiti students”, said Prof. Carmen Sammut, the UM’s Pro-Rector for Students & Staff Affairs and Outreach.
UM Rector, Prof. Alfred J. Vella also visited the stands, and expressed his thanks at the richness the Kuwaiti culture brings to the UM community.
Kuwaiti National Day marks the day when Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah ascended to the throne in 1950. He was key to acquiring independence of the nation from Britain, and formally establishing the Constitution and the Parliament of Kuwait. Nationwide festivities include impressive fireworks display, and public gatherings with food, drink and entertainment.
