As part of his pre-planned engagements during his visit to Malta in February 2024, the President of the Republic of Latvia, H.E. Edgars Rinkēvičs, visited the University of Malta’s Msida Campus where he was warmly greeted by Malta’s Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, Hon. Clifton Grima, and UM Rector, Prof. Alfred J. Vella.
He was then accompanied to the UM Council Room, where H.E. was presented with a copy of ‘University of Malta - Legacies & Bearing’, a book portraying UM’s historic milestones.
President Rinkēvičs, members of his delegation, together with Hon. Grima, and Prof. Vella briefly discussed the intensifying close cooperation between the two countries as well as the ensuing potential cooperation in several fields such as but not limited to infrastructure, energy, education and science.
President Rinkēvičs said he was appreciative of the country’s rich culture and huge strides in its education sector, which can be visibly noted through increased opportunities for student research and mobility.
Following that, H.E. delivered a lecture to a packed hall of students from the Department of International Relations and the Centre for the Study & Practice of Conflict Resolution, about Conflict Resolution Skills and their role in remedying in the fight against disinformation.
Later on in the day, together with Minister for National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government, Hon. Owen Bonnici, H.E. . The project Ċentru tal-Ilsien Malti involves the University of Malta, the State Advocate's Office, the Malta Technology Agency (MITA), and the Latvian company, Tilde, with the support of the Ministry.
President Edgars Rinkēvičs has been serving as the 11th and current President of Latvia as of July of 2013. Prior to that, he was the country’s Minister of Foreign Affairs since 2011. At his swearing-in ceremony, he vouched for
