The University of Malta’s Master’s and PhD ceremonies came to a close on Thursday 14 March 2024, as almost 1,500 students toasted to their academic success throughout March.
This included a record number of PhDs awarded this year with a total of 66 graduands successfully obtaining their doctorate.
Over the span of two weeks, a total of 18 ceremonies were held at the Basilica of Our Lady of Safe Haven and St Dominic in Valletta, where relatives were able to join the graduands as they received their degrees. The first ceremony was reserved exclusively for PhD students while the rest were for Master students.
Some of the most sought-after degrees were:
- the Executive Master in Business Administration
- the Master of Science from the Faculty of Economics, Management, and Accountancy
- the Master in Advocacy,
- the Doctor of Medicine and Surgery,
- the Master of Science from the Faculty of Health Sciences, and
- the Master in Teaching and Learning.
Other than being live-streamed via the University's social media pages, for the first time ever, the graduation ceremonies were also broadcast live on Xejk TV.
The last ceremony was dedicated to those who graduated with a Master in Knowledge-Based Entrepreneurship from the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Business Incubation, students who graduated with a Master of Arts from the Mediterranean Institute, and students who graduated with a Master of Arts, Master of Arts in Public Policy Leadership, Master of Science in Economics, or the Executive Master of Business Administration from the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy.
Since International Women’s Day also coincided with the graduation ceremonies, falling on 8 March the University released a video entitled ‘With gratitude for the women who paved the way’, featuring four female PhD graduates who all paid tribute to Tessie Camilleri, Malta’s first female graduand, whilst thanking all those who have helped them achieve their success.
Presently, female graduands account for the majority of all graduands, with 60.6% of the PhD graduands and 61.7% of the Master’s graduands in the March cohort being female.
Once again, the University of Malta congratulates all of its graduands and augurs them a successful and prosperous future.
As the University Rector, Prof. Alfred J. Vella said in his , “you now have a duty to contribute to the future of the society you will form part of”.
