From University of Malta Faculty of Medicine & Surgery Alumnus, to being the Chief Executive Officer of Mayo Clinic, one of the top-rated clinics in the world - Prof. Gianrico Farrugia, a gastroenterologist, has come a long way in his medical career.
and has been recognised as an Honour Roll member according to U.S. News & World Report's 2023-2024 "Best Hospitals" rankings.
After studying Biology, Chemistry and Physics at St Aloysius College, and getting his degree from the University of Malta, Prof. Farrugia got the opportunity to intern at St Luke's University Hospital, and shortly following that, at the Department of Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.
While there, Prof. Farrugia managed to move up the career ladder, progressing from a resident to a clinical investigator and later to a research fellowship. He also acted as a consultant in different departments within the clinic, while serving as a President of the American Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society.
On Friday 19 November 2019, the University of Malta awarded him an Honoris Causa.
His current role at Mayo Clinic consists of running the Enteric Neuroscience Program, with his focus being on how the normal functions of the gastrointestinal tract determine the defects that result in diseases such as diabetic gastroparesis and irritable bowel syndrome.
Speaking to a local media house, Prof. Farrugia said he doesn't take his achievements for granted and always remembers his roots.
