Prof. Peter Mayo, from the Department of Arts, Open Communities and Adult Education within the University's Faculty of Education, has been invited by the University of Turin and the Fondazione Istituto Piemontese Antonio Gramsci, to speak at the forthcoming seminar marking the 50th Anniversary of the 150 hours experiment in Italian working class education.
He will be addressing this landmark in international adult education as part of an overview of workers' education globally.
This was education for workers from the perspective of workers' representatives and workers' broader educational interests, and not for simply that which suited employers.
This kind of paid educational leave was secured by the metal workers and their union and testified to the latters' bargaining power.
The 150 hours, which effectively were more than this amount, led to, among other events, University and social movement driven monographic courses, focused on a specific theme, said to have boosted the women's movement in Italy - courses developed by women with women.
Prof. Mayo will be part of Panel 1, moderated by Ms Paula Alejandra Serrao from the University of Turin. The event will include speakers from Brazil, Florence, Turin, Paris and Milan.
More information, such as the programme of speakers, is available .
