He’s an engineer by profession, he heads the Department of Communications and Computer Engineering at the Faculty of ICT, he’s recently written a book of circular walks through the Maltese countryside, and he’s an avid rock climber and photographer.
At 48, Prof. Johann A. Briffa is sure to be well-versed in languages, spoken, written, and artificial.
He has been part of the UM for over 30 years, in different capacities. While he is now a professor, his favourite lesson to take from this journey is to have enough humility to accept help and advice when this is offered.
In addition to his academic work, Johann is also a dedicated outdoor enthusiast who enjoys rock climbing, hiking and photography. He says although this is quite a stark contrast from long hours spent at work, he needs both – and has managed to strike a reasonable balance between the two. In a , the Mental Health Foundation (UK) has shown the importance of connectedness with nature for our mental and physical health.
He has recently published his first book, titled ‘Country Walks in Malta’, encouraging readers to ‘embark on a journey of the breath-taking and natural beauty of Malta’. The book contains a number of interesting features, such as detailed 1:25 000 scale maps, clear directions, vivid photography, and labelled starting points with GPS coordinates and QR codes to simplify finding the starting point.
