Esteemed scholars and experts gathered in Malaga, Spain, from 22 May to 24 May 2024, for the 3rd World Forum Principles of Scientific Publishing, a pivotal event aimed at addressing the evolving landscape of scholarly communication. Dr Sarah Cuschieri, a lecturer with the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, was invited to be a keynote speaker as part of this World Forum.
The 3rd World Forum, building upon the successes of its predecessors, aimed to foster open dialogue and collaboration on critical issues shaping scientific publishing. With delegates representing 32 countries and spanning 30 different scientific disciplines, the forum provided a platform for exploring novel challenges facing publication ethics in today鈥檚 rapidly changing environment.
Under the theme "Novel Challenges for Publication Ethics," participants engaged in discussions on key topics such as Open Science, Artificial Intelligence, Predatory Journals, Fake publications, Retractions, Authorship attribution, and the challenges encountered by Non-native English speakers.
Throughout the forum, Dr Cuschieri emphasized the importance of upholding ethical standards in scientific publishing to maintain the integrity and credibility of research outputs. Drawing from her personal and professional experiences, she shared best practices for identifying reputable journals, navigating publication decisions, and avoiding the pitfalls of predatory practices.
Dr Sarah Cuschieri, a medical doctor, embarked on an academic and research journey at the University of Malta in 2013. Notable achievements include her role as Vice-President of EUPHA's chronic diseases section, receiving the 2021 TOYP Academic Leadership Award, Membership through Distinction at the Faculty of Public Health UK, and Fellowship in Higher Education (AdvanceHE). She ranks among the top 2% cited scientists in the world for 3 successive years and has authored several books including "A Roadmap to Successful Scientistic Publishing, The Dos, the Don鈥檛s and the Must-Knows."
