The Islands and Small States Institute of the University of Malta attended, as an officially accredited body, the fourth UN conference on the sustainable development of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), held from 27 to the 30 May in Antigua and Barbuda.
This was preceded by three similar SIDS global conferences held in Barbados in 1994, in Mauritius in 2005, and in 2014 in Samoa. The Head of the Maltese delegation was chaired by Pro-Chancellor Perit Karmenu Vella, who intervened in the plenary, highlighting the many initiatives that Malta led at UN level to support the sustainable development of SIDS.

The ISSI aims at providing excellence in teaching, research and outreach in the area of islands and small states studies, and to continue contributing to the development of the UM nationally, regionally and internationally.
