Shalaka, a US Fulbright English Teaching Assistant, and Aleah, another Fulbright ETA, delivered a presentation to grade 9 students at Verdala International School about the Fulbright US Student programme, which provides grants for graduates and young professionals to become cultural ambassadors for the US while teaching them the English language.
Shalaka Natu teaches students at L-Iskola Nazzjonali tal-Isport and at the University (she teaches a Degree Plus study unit called 'Presentation Skills and Public Speaking').
A University of Rochester biochemistry graduate, she will begin medical school this fall to serve her community through medicine, education, and health diplomacy.
Aleah Schrock teaches at St Thomas More College and at the University (she teaches the Degree Plus study unit about creative writing in an academic setting).
A Liberty University history major, she will attend Notre Dame Law School to serve migrants and work with international NGOs.
Both Shalaka and Aleah also teach adult literacy classes at Blue Door Education, a Valletta-based NGO providing free English courses to refugees, migrants, and asylum seekers. Recently, they visited VIS to speak to grade 9 students about the Fulbright programme and share advice they would give their grade 9 selves. With undergraduate degrees behind them, they took a year to be here through Fulbright and are now set to pursue further studies in medicine and law.
