On the first week of June 2024, Dr Luca Di Gennaro, a Marie Curie European Research Officer, paid a courtesy visit to the Headquarters of SICA, Central American Integration System in the Republic of El Salvador.
The Central American Integration System (SICA) is the institutional framework of Central American Regional Integration, created by the States of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. Later, Belize joined as full members in 2000 and, as of 2013, the Dominican Republic. Its fundamental objective is to achieve the integration of Central America, to constitute it as a Region of Peace, Freedom, Democracy and Development.
During the conversation, he shared his research priorities related to the production of official statistics and his contribution to the scope of the #SDGs, based on the adoption of the Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics of the United Nations.
He also talked about the importance of official statistics in integration processes, particularly referring to the European experience, through the work of the European Statistical Office - EUROSTAT and its role in community policies of the European Union.
The staff of the SICA headquarters building got to know the procedures and good practices adopted by the European Union EU with regard to the functioning of the European Statistical System, in support of decision-making and the formulation and implementation of public community policies, focused on the priorities of the countries.
The conversation "The Role of Official Statistics in the Implementation of European Union Community Policies", was also led by Dr di Gennaro, in coordination with SG-SICA, to share the peculiarities of official statistics managed by EUROSTAT in the decision-making processes of the European Union.
