The University of Malta marked this year’s International Men’s Day with the launch of an innovative initiative, Raġel fuq l-Irġiel. This initiative was launched during a Teach-In which focused on Masculinities in Maltese Contemporary Society. This event was organised by the University’s Equity Office in collaboration with the Gender Equality and Sexual Diversity Committee, highlighting the institution’s commitment to addressing gender dynamics and inclusivity.
The launch of Raġel fuq l-Irġiel represents a significant step forward in promoting awareness, understanding, and inclusivity regarding masculinities. In her opening speech, Pro-Rector for Student & Staff Affairs and Outreach, Prof. Carmen Sammut said that:
“The societal pressures for men to conform to aggressive, unemotional, and dominating behaviours not only harm men but also perpetuate cycles of harm affecting families, workplaces, and communities. Addressing toxic masculinity is not an attack on men—it is a critique of harmful societal norms. By rethinking masculinity, we can promote healthier, more constructive behaviours that benefit everyone.”
This Teach-In explored how societal changes are reshaping traditional understandings of masculinity. While hegemonic masculinities have been increasingly challenged in recent years, there is still a need to delve deeper into how men are exploring and redefining their roles in response to these socio-cultural shifts. The event featured a dynamic panel of speakers who shared personal experiences, scholarly research, and professional insights on a diverse range of topics related to masculinity.
Speakers from various fields delivered presentations on subjects such as fatherhood, toxic masculinities and online hate speech, representation in digital gaming, Maltese literature and education.
Moreover, an online platform was also launched to serve as a repository where all contributions from this Teach-in and future events under this initiative will be stored and made publicly accessible.
With a jam-packed room of attendees, this event kicked off a multidisciplinary conversation, which has certainly inspired further dialogue and action. Stay tuned for upcoming events in this series.
