On Saturday 25th January the International Office and the Confucius Institute organised an afternoon of activities at the University of Malta Valletta Campus to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The event was also supported by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Malta.
UM Chinese students and students studying Chinese at the UM and Junior College were invited for the event. Guests were entertained to an afternoon of live music and dance performances followed by fun games and food prepared by the CI teachers and students. Participants also had the opportunity to assemble dumplings which were then cooked on location.
Delivering the opening address, Pro-Rector for Internationalisation and Quality Assurance Prof. Frank J. Bezzina noted that these events foster a deeper understanding of cultural heritage leading to new friendships and wider engagement. He augured that we shall carry forward the spirit of the Chinese New Year – one of kindness, respect and hope for a brighter future.
Mr. Peng Yijun, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Malta, expressed his gratitude to the University of Malta and the Confucius Institute for organising this first gathering and thanked the University for all the work and the support provided towards the Chinese students and the promotion of Chinese language and culture.
