In a celebration of scientific excellence and cross-border collaboration, Xjenza Malta and the Embassy of Italy in Malta proudly hosted the Italian National Research Day Celebration on Friday evening at the historic Villa Bighi and its scenic gardens, under the distinguished patronage of Mr. Silvio Scerri, CEO of Xjenza Malta, and His Excellency Dr Fabrizio Romano, Italian Ambassador to Malta.
The event brought together leading scientists, researchers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders to highlight the achievements and future potential of Italo-Maltese cooperation in the field of marine research.
The discussion emphasised the crucial importance of joint scientific initiatives in addressing the shared challenges of the Mediterranean Sea, from climate change impacts to biodiversity conservation and sustainable blue economy development as well as actions to mitigate risks.
The evening鈥檚 highlight was a stimulating expert panel discussion titled "The Impact of Italian and Maltese Research on the Marine Ecosystem." Esteemed speakers included Professor Andrea Miccoli from Italy's National Research Council (CNR) - Institute for Biological Resources and Marine Biotechnologies (IRBIM), and Malta鈥檚 Ocean Ambassador Professor Alan Deidun from the University of Malta鈥檚 Faculty of Science and the . The discussion, skillfully moderated by Professor Sebastiano D鈥橝mico of the University of Malta鈥檚 Department of Geosciences, explored the latest scientific findings, ongoing research projects, and strategic priorities for safeguarding marine environments.
Panelists presented ground breaking work ranging from marine biodiversity monitoring and coastal protection to advanced biotechnological solutions for ocean sustainability. The discussion also underscored the value of continuous collaboration between Malta and Italy, not only in scientific fields but also in promoting education, innovation, and environmental stewardship across the Mediterranean region.
Following the panel, guests had the opportunity to engage in a networking reception, fostering new partnerships and knowledge exchange among researchers, academics, and policy leaders. Adding to the festive spirit of the evening, attendees were treated to a breathtaking view of the Fireworks Festival opening night, providing a spectacular backdrop to a night celebrating innovation and unity.
