The (BSRLM) has announced that Dr James Calleja is the recipient of the prestigious Janet Duffin Award for 2024. His , “Teachers’ structuring of mathematical inquiry lessons: shifting from ‘task-first’ to ‘scaffolded inquiry’”, published in Research in Mathematics Education (RME), was selected as the most outstanding contribution to the journal in 2024.
Dr Calleja, a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Education, focuses his research on teacher professional learning, mathematics education, lesson study and inquiry-based teaching and learning. His award-winning paper explores how teachers can transition from a traditional “task-first” approach to a more dynamic “scaffolded inquiry” model, promoting deeper student engagement and understanding in mathematics.
As part of the award, Dr Calleja has been invited to deliver a plenary talk at the BSRLM Summer Day Conference on June 13 2025, in Glasgow. This recognition underscores his significant contributions to mathematics education and his commitment to enhancing teaching practices.
