On 3 April 2025, the , in collaboration with the , organised a symposium titled "The Power of Digital Transformation in Healthcare: Innovations and Impact".
The event brought together healthcare professionals, researchers, academics, students, and policymakers to explore the evolving role of digital innovation in transforming healthcare delivery and strategy, both locally and globally.
The symposium opened with remarks by , who highlighted the relevance of the University鈥檚 MSc in Digital Health programme in preparing professionals with the interdisciplinary competencies needed to lead digital transformation in healthcare. Mr Euchar Sultana (Chief 福利在线免费 Officer, Ministry for Health and Active Ageing) presented Malta鈥檚 national and European digital health strategy, highlighting key infrastructural and policy milestones.
Graduates of the MSc in Digital Health programme, Ms Marianne Chetcuti and Ms Rebecca Galea presented applied research projects focused on the use of machine learning and electronic health records to predict hospital readmissions, and strategies to improve outpatient management through digital interventions.
Keynote speaker, Prof Georgi Chaltikyan, emphasised the power of online engagement in fostering global collaboration in digital health.
A panel discussion led by explored the role of AI in healthcare, highlighting current opportunities and challenges. The discussion featured distinguished panellists from government, Malta Enterprise, and MEDTech: Mr Euchar Sultana, Ms Jackie Grech and Dr. Miguel Fenech, addressed the benefits of AI, such as clinical decision support and predictive analytics, while identifying ethical, regulatory and practical implications.
A final Q&A session was organised with i, Mater Dei Hospital, on bridging real-world challenges related to healthcare datasets. She emphasised the need for robust data governance and interdisciplinary cooperation.
The closing networking and poster session featured a showcase of research from MSc in Digital Health graduates and an exhibit by DiHubMT, Malta鈥檚 digital innovation hub supporting SMEs and startups in healthcare technology. The symposium reaffirms the university鈥檚 commitment to advancing digital health and aims to shape the future of healthcare innovation.
