, Senior Lecturer in Professional Learning and Development at the Department of Leadership for Learning and Innovation within the , was invited to deliver the Opening Plenary at the British Society for Research into Learning Mathematics (BSRLM) Summer Conference 2025.
Held on Friday 13 June at the University of Glasgow, his lecture, titled “Beyond lesson structures: Teachers’ beliefs, contextual realities, and the practice of scaffolded mathematical inquiryâ€, explored the ways teachers attune their practices to enact inquiry-based mathematics lessons. It was warmly received by an audience of over 80 international mathematics education researchers and practitioners.
This prestigious invitation followed recognition by BSRLM members of Dr Calleja’s significant contributions to mathematics education, particularly in the area of teacher professional development. Following his plenary, Dr Calleja was presented with the Janet Duffin Award 2024.
His , “Teachers’ structuring of mathematical inquiry lessons: shifting from ‘task-first’ to ‘scaffolded’ inquiryâ€, published in the journal Research in Mathematics Education (RME), was selected as the most outstanding contribution of 2024.
The Janet Duffin Award is conferred annually by BSRLM to the author(s) of the most impactful research article published in RME in the preceding year. The winner is chosen through a vote involving BSRLM members and the RME Editorial Board. The award recipient is then invited to deliver the Janet Duffin Lecture at one of the Society’s conferences.
Dr Calleja received the award from Simon Duffin, son of the late Janet Duffin, and Professor Alf Coles, Chair of BSRLM. The award and accompanying lecture are supported by the Janet Duffin Fund, established through the generosity of the Duffin family.
