A new student-worker scheme is set to be launched by the Lands Authority, offering aspiring professionals hands-on experience as trainee officers while studying for a university-accredited qualification in Sustainable Land Management.
The initiative was officially announced on Friday 13 June 2025 by Culture, Lands and Local Government Minister, Hon. Owen Bonnici during his first visit to the Lands Authority since assuming responsibility for the portfolio in last month’s cabinet reshuffle.
At the heart of the scheme is a fully sponsored part-time course — the MQF Level 4 Award in Sustainable Land Management — which has been developed and will be delivered by the Institute for Climate Change & Sustainable Development at the University of Malta. The institute, known for its multidisciplinary approach to environmental education and policy, is playing a central role in equipping students with the skills and knowledge necessary for responsible land stewardship.
Spanning two semesters and carrying 16 ECTS credits, the course covers essential topics such as sustainability principles, land law, planning, and economics — areas identified as critical for effective land administration.
Originally designed to enhance the capabilities of existing Lands Authority staff, the programme has already seen 16 internal employees graduate successfully. With the launch of this new scheme, the opportunity is now being extended to external applicants eager to enter the field through a work-and-study model.
It is open also to real estate professionals and those working in the field of land management.
Applications for the scheme will be opening soon, targeting individuals interested in contributing to Malta’s evolving land management landscape while advancing their academic and professional qualifications.
