A new therapeutic and support service for families during the prenatal and postnatal periods has been launched, with a strong focus on emotional and psychological well-being for both mothers and fathers. This specialised service, which spans the perinatal period鈥攆rom pregnancy through the first year after birth鈥攁ims to address not only the joys of parenthood but also the challenges, including depression, anxiety, and trauma that affect many during this transformative time.
The service is being delivered by Positive Parenting Malta and is the result of a significant collaboration with the Department of Child and Family Studies at the University of Malta.
The University played a central role in the development of the initiative, providing research and expertise through its academic leadership. Prof. Angela Abela, who spearheaded research in this field, noted that the new service will enhance current support systems and introduce vital new elements, such as targeted help for fathers鈥攁n often-overlooked group, with about one in ten men affected during the perinatal period.
Positive Parenting Malta Chairperson Ruth Sciberras highlighted that the service was shaped by both academic insight and clinical need, noting that men who previously sought therapy reported substantial benefits. She emphasised the importance of addressing the stigma surrounding mental health and encouraging families to seek support.
The initiative was officially announced by Minister for Social Policy and Children鈥檚 Rights, Hon. Michael Falzon, who described it as part of the Government鈥檚 broader commitment to supporting families, promoting mental health, and investing in early intervention. Dr Falzon said that the new service forms part of a growing system that recognises perinatal mental health as a national priority, offering early screening and accessible care for all families.
