A fresh wave of enthusiasm has swept across Malta as the Chess Buddies initiative, whereby the community-driven programme offering chess sessions and events that combine fun learning with charitable activities, makes a return.
When organisers called for local clubs to participate, the —under the leadership of president Matthias Gatt and his executive team—stepped up enthusiastically.
Building on their early successes, including hosting the university’s first-ever Chess Open in April with participation from both students and professionals, the UM Chess Club now brings that same energy to Chess Buddies.
As Chess Buddies Malta continues rolling out sessions across local schools and community centres, the active participation of the UM Chess Club ensures the university becomes even more deeply woven into Malta’s broader chess ecosystem.
This summer’s edition of the Primary Mixed Interschool Chess Tournament will be held on 2 August at ÄŠentru San Ä użepp Ħaddiem in Birkirkara.
The event is in collaboration with the Malta Chess Federation, Swieqi Chess Club & University of Malta Chess Club.
The tournament is committed to helping spread chess awareness and create more opportunities for children to learn and play the game.
