On arriving to the commemoration venue, Prof. Bianco signed the Srebrenica Memorial Centre Condolence book and entered the following message:
“On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Malta, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica remembrance, I wish to honour the memory of the victims, stand in solidarity with the survivors, and reaffirm the collective commitment to truth, justice, and reconciliation. The legacy of Srebrenica is a profound reminder of the consequences of hatred and the importance of preserving human dignity and peace as confirmed by the United Nations General Assembly adoption of the resolution proclaiming July 11 as the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration”.
For this poignant ceremony, thousands gathered to remember when, in July 1995, more than 8,000 Bosniak boys and men were rounded up and summarily executed in and around Srebrenica. After the commemoration, seven newly identified victims, including two 19-year-olds, were laid to rest in a collective funeral at the memorial cemetery in Potočari.
The commemoration ceremony was attended by victims’ families and by a number of international officials and dignitaries including António Costa and Marta Kos, the President of the European Council and European Commissioner for Enlargement, respectively, and Natasa Pirc Musar, Andrej Plenkovic and Albin Kurti, the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia, and Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo, respectively. Others included the Speaker of the Turkish Parliament Numan Kurtulmuş and Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, who delivered a message from King Charles III.
