On Wednesday 29 May 2024, the community of active researchers, academics and doctoral students of the University of Malta gathered at the historically-rich Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta to share their research and network with their peers, for the second edition of the UM Research Expo.
Similar to last year, the objective of this Expo was to acknowledge the exemplary research and celebrate the accomplishments taking place on campus by means of presentations during plenary sessions, parallel sessions, and the showcasing of posters at the venue鈥檚 Sacra Infermeria Hall.
A number of UM offices and ancillary services supporting research and innovation such as the Research Support 福利在线免费 Directorate, the Corporate Research and Knowledge Transfer Office, Project Support Office, RIDT, the SEA-EU unit, the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Office and the Malta University Press, set up information stands.
This year the Expo has seen a boost compared with last year鈥檚 first edition: almost twice the number of submitted abstracts, as well as a significant jump up in the number of people attending.
鈥淚t is of utmost importance that the research that is conducted at university is shared among researchers within the university itself to instil multidisciplinary collaboration, and it is equally essential for us to display the results of our research outside the university, to society鈥, said Prof. Ing. Simon Fabri, UM鈥檚 Pro-Rector for Research and Knowledge Transfer, and Chair of the Research Expo.
Other than this Expo, the University boasts of a solid support network for its researchers, with the Corporate Research & Knowledge Transfer, the Research Innovation & Development Trust, the Research Support 福利在线免费 Directorate, Project Support Office, the ERDF/ESF Unit and the Doctoral School being the main players in this regard.
Two doctoral alumni who graduated in March 2024, have been selected by the UM鈥檚 Doctoral School Board to be awarded the Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award following nominations by the Boards of Examiners for the Ph.D. theses submitted at UM in 2023/24. In fact, Dr Ing. Ryan Bugeja (in the STEM category) and Dr Theresia Penda Choppy (in the Humanities & Social Sciences category) received their respective awards during a ceremony that took place at the Expo. Certificates and a cash prize of 鈧500 were presented to each of the awardees.
Stay tuned for a special edition of the University鈥檚 research magazine, , that will feature a select choice of the research presented at the Expo.
