The University of Malta has officially launched its participation in the EmpowerAId Erasmus+ Teacher Academies project (Erasmus-Edu-2024-Pex-Teach-Aca) with the successful completion of the Kick-Off Meeting held on 13–14 May 2025 in Vilnius, Lithuania. Hosted by project coordinator Vilnius University, the meeting brought together 10 partners from 8 European countries to initiate collaboration on this innovative initiative.

EmpowerAId seeks to close the gap between digital transformation and social inclusion in higher education by co-designing and implementing AI-supported inclusive learning environments. The project focuses on promoting equity, accessibility, and innovation, and will produce a range of outputs including case studies, toolkits, training resources, and policy guidelines aimed at empowering educators and students to engage meaningfully with AI in education.

During the two-day meeting, partners aligned on project objectives, deliverables, communication strategies, and pilot activities. The University of Malta, led by Dr Diane Vassallo from the Faculty of Education, will play a key role in identifying best practices, leading case study research, and supporting professional development on inclusive pedagogy and AI integration.

The meeting marked the official start of the project’s 30-month journey, while also laying the foundation for a strong and collaborative consortium committed to advancing digital inclusion in education. Through co-creation and capacity building, the project aims to create sustainable and innovative approaches to AI integration that benefit diverse learners across Europe.

Looking ahead, the next transnational project meeting will be hosted by the University of Malta in December 2025, with a focus on refining case studies, evaluating early progress, and continuing the co-design of inclusive AI strategies in educational settings.
