The University of Malta has been chosen to host the 36 th General Assembly of the European Seismological Commission in 2018. The city of Valletta won the bid among competition from three other European cities. The GA will be organised by the Department of Geosciences, within the Faculty of Science. Dr Sebastiano D鈥橝mico, from the Seismic Monitoring and Research Group is the Chair of the Local Organising Committee and has been elected to serve as ESC vice-president for the 2 years preceding the GA.
The event will take place at the Mediterranean Conference Centre between 1 and 7 September 2018 and will be preceded by a one-week Young Seismologists Training Course. The ESC is a commission within the International Association for Seismology and Physics of the Earth鈥檚 Interior. The General Assembly takes place every two years and brings together over 500 seismologists and young scientists from across Europe, the United States and other continents to present the most recent research in seismology and its numerous applications. It also addresses issues of earthquake engineering, societal aspects of seismology and education.
