The within the University of Malta’s Faculty of Health Sciences in collaboration with the of the University’s Faculty of Science, are pleased to announce a unique opportunity for students interested in pursuing a career related to physics, medical physics and radiation protection to attend summer school sessions virtually from the safety of their home.
Starting Wednesday 10 June 2020 from 15:00 until 18:00, weekly sessions will be held, free of charge, via ZOOM, to acquaint the interested applicants with the professions of Medical Physics and Radiation Protection.
Targeted to Physics and Mathematics students currently attending their final year at sixth form, these sessions will help them acquire an understanding of the fundamental biophysics and human biology necessary to pursue studies for the BSc (Hons) Physics, Medical Physics and Radiation Protection whilst gaining an overview of the course programme.
How can Physics be applied to healthcare? Medical physicists help improve the quality, cost-effectiveness and safety of healthcare services through ensuring optimal use of medical devices, and ensuring protection from physical agents such as x-rays, ultrasound and lasers as used in medicine - patients exposed as part of their diagnosis or treatment, workers working in a radiation environment whether in medicine or industry and the protection of the general public.
from the Faculty of Health Sciences, who is leading the initiative, commented: “this is the second year we are holding this highly successful Summer School. It is an excellent opportunity for physics and mathematics students to remain engaged in their learning over the summer months, in a structured manner. The school will widen their perspective of the applications of physics in society and leading to better opportunities in a fast-changing globalised world”.
Registration can be done via email, with the name of the applicant and the words ‘Summer School’ in the subject and contact details included in the body text.
