The Nazzareno Vassallo Award 2023 is being organised by Group as part of the 30th Anniversary celebrations this year.
Previous editions of the Award have recognised a number of outstanding people — mainly older persons whose work helped other vulnerable people live a fuller life within the community.
Named after Nazzareno Vassallo, who was the first entrepreneur to have recognised the need to embark on providing private care services for the elderly in Malta, the Award became an annual event synonymous with honouring a number of initiatives aimed at improving the physical, emotional and psychological well-being of older persons.
This year's award will return to its origins following the pandemic, that to recognise a number of outstanding people whose work really helped the most vulnerable to live a fuller life within the community. The winners of the last edition, held in 2021, were Charles Casha, Joseph Debono, Rita Saliba and Trevor Zahra. These writers were chosen for their contribution towards the elderly during the pandemic, for the various initiatives, mainly through virtual reading sessions of the Maltese Literature.
This year's award is open not only to older persons, but to all those who have selflessly helped older persons cope with the many difficulties faced, thus making a significant difference to their lives — physically, emotionally and psychologically.
CareMalta, Malta's largest organisation in the provision of care for older persons, operates nine homes for the elderly, employing over 1,300 people and caring for 1,700 residents. CareMalta is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year with a number of initiatives and events to mark this special milestone.
