The European Patent Office will be launching a short course; “Create – Protect – Innovate: Bringing ideas to market” which shall be opened for University of Malta PhD students. The course is divided into two Parts: Part I (Entry level) and Part II (Advanced level). Upon successful completion of all the relevant course activities, you will be awarded an official EPO certificate and will be eligible to have the course recognised by Degree+ on your transcript.
The aim of the course is to complement existing IP education with hands-on practitioners' perspective and inform students on how to use the patent system to support innovation. The course covers topics such as patents, IP Commercialisation and the use of different IP Rights. It will teach you how to protect inventions, bring them to market and will provide valuable insights on the world of innovation.
Both Part I and Part II consist of; five self-paced online learning modules (consisting of high-quality videos, podcasts, and interactive educational elements), two tutored forums, a final marked exercise and three live online sessions. These online sessions will be held from 16:00 to 17:30 (CEST) with a minimum of two weeks between each session.
Part I - Entry Level will be starting on Monday 2 October 2023 and ending Friday 15 December. It will cover the following topics:
Module 1: Introduction to IP
Module 2: Patent essentials
Module 3: Introduction to patent information
Module 4: Patent information in practice
Module 5: Developing an IP strategy

Part 2 - Advanced Level will be starting on Monday 1 April 2024 and ending Friday 14 June 2024. It will cover the following topics:
Module 1: Grant of patents
Module 2: Enforcement of patents
Module 3: Scouting and assessment of technology
Module 4: IP commercialisation
Module 5: Use of IPRs
