Prof. Stephen Fava has been appointed by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre to form part of the Working Group on Diabetes Indicators. The University of Malta will thus be a collaborating centre in this important initiative.
This project aims to improve the information on disease burden across Europe – also with the view to detect geographical and temporal trends of epidemiology including prevalence, incidence, premature mortality, and survival data for major diseases. Diabetes is an extremely common disease which can lead to a number of complications, including heart disease, strokes, foot problems, amputations, kidney disease, loss of vision and mental health problems. It also results in reduced life expectancy and significant health care costs. It is envisaged that this work would serve as a catalyst to tackle other the major non-communicable diseases.
Prof. Fava is a full time Professor in the Faculty of Medicine & Surgery at the University of Malta. He is also the head of the Diabetes & Endocrine Centre and Chairperson of the Department of Medicine at Mater Dei Hospital as well as Chairperson of the Specialist Committee and President of the Association of Physicians of Malta.
