Last week a group of sixth form students from St Aloysius College attended several talks on campus about career options and study courses in the Science industry. This event took place at the University chaplaincy and followed by visits to a number of labs, institutes and faculties.
During their visit students were encouraged to choose science, UM academics explained to them that it is of benefit to society at large, and how science helps us to understand the world around us and help in problem solving and decision making. “Students who study science gain transferable analytical skills and have excellent career prospects.” Said Dr Fiona Sammut, Head of the Statistics & Operations Research Department.
The areas of study which were discussed during the visit were; Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Statistics and Operations research, Institute of Space Sciences and Astronomy, Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Engineering, and Department of Physics.
Furthermore the faculties explained the various degrees offered, both at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Some undergraduate degrees are also offered in conjunction with other faculties.
One of the UM academics present at this event was Dr Mark Anthony Caruana, a lecturer within the Department of statistics and Operations research at the faculty of Science.
He explained to the students what Statistics and Operations Research are through a two minute video in which examples are given of how and where these two areas of research are used.
Dr Caruana briefly explained the entry requirements to the courses presented as well as the subjects which can be chosen together with Statistics and Operations Research for a joint degree in Science. Lastly he shared examples of diverse job opportunities available in this line of work.
