Allanson Cruickshank, a second year PhD student at the Islands and Small States Institute (ISSI), presented a book chapter titled, “A Post-Eruption Analysis of the Significance and Challenges of Community-based Disaster Risk Management in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines” at the inaugural Soufrière Conference in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The chapter, co-authored together with Dr. Rose-Ann Smith, Sanya Compton and Aria Laidlow-Ferdinand, is the seventh in the "Handbook of Civil Society and Social Movements in Small States." The was published by Routledge in 2023 and edited by Prof. Lino Briguglio, Dr Michael Briguglio, Prof. Sheila Bunwaree, and Dr Claire Slatter.
The Conference was organised jointly by the University of the West Indies’ Open Campus in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and the Seismic Research Centre of the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago. The conference, themed “Ash, Explosions and Lahars”, consisted of academic presentations on 29 March 2023 at the University of the West Indies Open Campus in Kingstown, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. On 30 March 2023, conference attendees visited the areas that were worst affected by the eruption of the La Soufriere volcano, examining impacts and recovery work that has taken place since the explosive blasts in April 2021.
Allanson’s research supervisor is Dr Stefano Moncada, Director of the ISSI, and his co-supervisor is Dr Adelle Thomas, University of the Bahamas. His PhD research examines volcanic risk reduction and multiple hazards in Caribbean SIDS. Allanson’s PhD research is supported by the University of Malta Scholarships scheme.
