, founded in 2019, is a global programme that Google has opened amongst universities for students who are interested in Google’s developer technology.
Students from all undergraduate or graduate programmes with an interest in growing as a developer are welcome to becoming a part of this chapter. By joining a GDSC community, students are able to grow their knowledge in a peer-to-peer learning environment and build solutions to bridge the gap between theory and practice.
Each year, Google puts a call out to the entire GDSC global community for a student in a university community to take the role of becoming a Lead.
James Gatt, a 2nd year student in the University of Malta, currently studying Computer Engineering in the Faculty of ICT, was always interested in Android, an aspect of Google technology. Showing this interest, by being active in the open source community to share his discoveries amongst other developers, and promoting it in several international conferences such as in droidcon Berlin, took this opportunity to open the Google Developer Student Clubs chapter, here at the University of Malta.
Since James has applied as a Lead role for this new chapter, Google has recognised James’ ability in taking on this role and opened the program for the first time ever in Malta in August 2023.
From the beginning of the university semester, this club has grown with a core team, members and events.
Welcoming Event
The , which took place on 26 October, was the start of the momentum of the club. This info-session event, which took place in the Faculty of ICT served as an informal networking event for current and prospective students of the University to learn about this new program, whilst making their interests clear for future event ideas.
This event was a success as James and the core team had positive reactions towards the program, and a lot of interest from students to learn and grow their knowledge in Google technologies. Apart from this first event, James highlighted the major 2 events that take place during the GDSC chapter.
DevFest
, a conference-like event, is a great showcase of Google technologies with sessions and stands happening throughout a full day.
Scheduled for 6 December, James and ‘Google Developer Experts’ will occupy different time slots throughout the day with hourly talks about 4 major aspects of Google technologies:
- Mobile
- Web
- AI
- Cloud
Students from around the campus are invited to join in these different talks throughout the day to benefit from recent and useful information when it comes to Google technologies.
This event will commence at 08:00, with a reception in the Faculty of ICT Auditorium, followed by 4 Google Developer Expert talks consisting of Kotlin, Community, Web and Cloud talks by people from SoundCloud, Intel, Google and other recognised individuals up till 12:00 with a networking session up till 14:00.
In the evening, the event moves to VC101 in the IT Building with local speakers, like James’ droidcon Berlin talk, “Code AOSP: No time to EOL (die)” and Simon Agius Muscat’s talk about Kubernetes technology.
Given this jam-packed agenda, there is something for everyone to learn from! The best part is that registration and participation is free! You may reserve your place by RSVPing .
With these events putting this new chapter in full motion, it’s a fantastic moment to grow your expertise and connections in upcoming events and always learn more with the developing technologies around us!
Also look ahead to hearing more information about GDSC’s , in aid to solve one or more of the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals using Google technology.
