Weightlifter and student at the Institute for Physical Education and Sport (IPES), Ms Tenishia Thornton won the Sportswoman of the Year Award at the 64th edition of the Għażliet Sportivi Nazzjonali held on Saturday 2 March 2024, in the presence of Malta's Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, Hon. Clifton Grima.
Ms Thornton’s excellent performance on the international scene during the past year was particularly notable, having won a spate of medals in a series of international competitions.
She took gold and silver at the Commonwealth Championship and the Mediterranean Championships, and landed two gold medals at the European Small Nations Championship.
On a related note, the Women's National Football Team was crowned as Team of the Year, after having qualified to the EUFA Nations League.

On behalf of the University, Director of IPES, Prof. Andrew Decelis, expressed his pride at this excellent result, augured Ms Thornton every success in her career, and reiterated the Institute's commitment to keep nurturing Malta's finest athletes whilst supporting them in their dual-career.
