In recent months, a dedicated group of University of Malta students has been hard at work constructing a rocket to represent the country in a prominent international competition set to take place in Portugal.
The recently unveiled their creation during a special event held at the Planetarium Hall at Esplora.
This marks Malta’s inaugural participation in the (EuRoC)—a prestigious event that gathers student teams from across Europe to showcase innovation and engineering excellence in rocketry.
Speaking on behalf of Xjenza Malta, Dr Michael Quinton praised the project as a reflection of both the students’ exceptional capabilities and the University’s commitment to experiential, research-driven education.
Consisting of approximately 50 students drawn from various academic backgrounds, the UM Rocketry Team has spent months meticulously developing, constructing, and refining a functional rocket. The team is now entering a crucial phase, preparing for a dry burn test of its propulsion system followed by a live launch trial, aiming to reach an altitude of one kilometre.
These tests are vital in the lead-up to EuRoC 2025, where the team will attempt to achieve a flight altitude of three kilometres in competition with other top-tier university teams.
Francesco Cini, Founder and President of the UM Rocketry Team, remarked on the project’s growth: “What began as a bold vision among a few students has evolved into a nationally significant engineering initiative.”
The event wrapped up with a networking session and an up-close look at the rocket itself, giving attendees insight into the complex technical efforts and milestones the team has achieved so far.
