A group of Masters students in conservation from Al Quds University were recently at the University of Malta on a study visit organised by the Department of Conservation and Built Heritage, in the Faculty for the Built Environment, with the support of the Notarial Archives Foundation, Heritage Malta, Campus Hub and Caf茅 Cuba at Campus Hub.
The group, led by Professor Ibrahim Abu Aemar, had an intensive week of lectures and discussion, as well as on-site visits and workshops. The group had the opportunity to share and discuss experiences with colleagues in Malta regarding the work being done to address a range of conservation challenges, from the study of the performance of protective shelters over Mnajdra, to the conservation of the Nymphaeum at the Argotti Botanic Gardens and the medieval frescoes at 摩al Millieri. At the Notarial Archives Foundation, they had a very valuable exchange with the in-house conservation team, particularly regarding conservation ethics and techniques. Of special interest were the Islamic texts originating from the eastern Mediterranean, which form part of the Maritime Collection at the Notarial Registers Archive. During the study visit, these texts sparked a thoughtful dialogue on conservation strategies tailored to their unique material and historical context.
The study visit was a great success, and the networking that has been achieved has laid the foundations for further collaborations and exchanges with Al Quds University.
