1. Applications are invited for a grant funded by the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Malta.
2. Applicants must be registered doctoral students (Ph.D. or Pharm.D.) with the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery and in possession of a Master’s degree in one of the following areas: Allied Health Sciences, Pharmacy, Medical Biochemistry and Pharmacology; or a Medical degree.
3. The duration of the grant shall be the same as the duration of the approved research project period or as determined by the Faculty Research Funding Committee (FRFC).
4. This grant shall provide reimbursements of up to €30,000 to cover bench fees or other expenses directly related to the research, including travel expenses and research publication costs, but will not cover the enrolment/tuition fees or costs related to studying and living in Malta.
5. Applicants should submit their letter of application by not later than 31 May 2024 by email together with the following documents:
- University Letter of Acceptance;
- Research Proposal and covering letter;
- Supervisor’s endorsement;
- Faculty Research Ethics (FREC) approval;
- Budget including breakdown of expenses;
- Declaration that there are no other sources of funding;
- Informed consent and data protection;
- Bench fees form;
- CV and scanned copy of certificates.
6. The scholarship is intended to support students who have clear goals for their future and applicants are expected to explain how they believe doctoral research will allow them to shape their plans after graduation. Applicants are expected to declare any special attributes and accomplishments that they think make them deserving of the scholarship. Late applications will not be considered.
7. All applications received will be reviewed by a board which is chaired by the Pro-Rector for Research and Knowledge Transfer, and includes the Director of the Doctoral School and the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine & Surgery as members.

Terms and conditions
The award may not be held concurrently with another major award for the same purpose unless with prior permission of the Doctoral School. The award holder may not engage in employment which is likely to interfere with the progress of their research and must seek the permission of Senate, on the recommendation of the Faculty Doctoral Committee, the Board and the Doctoral Academic Committee before engaging in any employment. The Faculty Doctoral Committee must be kept informed about the nature and extent of their employment commitments throughout their period of study.
The award holder should sign a grant agreement, abide by all applicable regulations and policies of the UM in force during the course of studies and will be required to provide progress reports on an annual basis (normally in May) to the Faculty Doctoral Committee as required by University regulations and procedures. At the end of tenure, a final report must be submitted highlighting the outcomes of the project.
The Doctoral School requests that the award holder acknowledges the assistance of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, University of Malta in any publications arising wholly or partially from the award.
