The first cohort of students on the new International MBA taking the Entrepreneurship elective with Dr Nathaniel Massa and Dr Antonietta Rosiello at the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy, recently completed their hands-on startup feasibility analysis project. This pertained to their identified start-up business idea or intrapreneurial concept.
Straddling semesters, this project formed an integral part of the elective. It entailed identifying a novel idea or concept targeting a market need with sustained value potential. Following fine-tuning, the International MBA participants worked in teams, researching and undertaking a full feasibility analysis under the guidance of their lecturers and specialists in the field.
Besides a comprehensive feasibility report and a final presentation pitch including where relevant prototypes or demos, deliverables also included tailored individual components. The MBA cohort engaged in research – in various instances conducting surveys, focus groups and leveraging contacts and professional networks including suppliers. This, towards assessing product, market, organisational and financial feasibility; as well as analysing client pain points and competitiveness dynamics.
During the programme, project teams had the opportunity to stress-test and present their early stage ideas to a panel of seasoned professionals internationally active in the entrepreneurship scene hailing from areas associated with mentoring, foresight and creativity, knowledge management and IP, crowdfunding, and business venture consulting – at a Global Entrepreneurship Week event – part of a broader international network spanning 200+ countries, locally hosted by The Edward de Bono Institute for Creative Thinking and Innovation at the University of Malta. At a later stage, a specialist guest session included insight from the University’s Centre for Entrepreneurship and Business Incubation, and the TAKEOFF business incubator; as well as the Corporate Research and Knowledge Transfer Office and Malta University Innovation Portfolio Ltd.
The MBA cohort’s ideas and concepts ranged across environmental recreation and alternative energy solutions; sustainable products; a digital gaming concept; expat services and a pet-owner community venture.
Following completion of their International MBA project, some among the participants will be looking into the prospects of possibly taking their idea further.
